Chest Pain in a Bodybuilder

Condition

Chest pain radiating to the upper and mid-back

Treatment

Cupping, manual therapy, and exercise

Cardiac check

2D Echo normal

The Patient

A bodybuilder who trained regularly at the gym.

The Challenge

He had persistent, burning chest pain that sometimes spread to his upper and mid-back. Because the symptoms felt like a heart problem, he was naturally worried. His 2D Echo was normal, ruling out a cardiac cause, but the pain continued and worsened during chest-press exercises.

Our Assessment
  • Shoulder: Movement was restricted, especially when lifting the arm forward and out to the side.
  • Chest: Significant tightness and stiffness in the pectoralis muscles.
  • Upper back: The rhomboids and trapezius were also very tight.

Together, the stiffness in his chest and upper back was affecting his shoulder movement and mechanics, which explained the pain he was feeling.

Our Approach
  • Cupping therapy for soft-tissue release
  • Manual release of the chest and back muscles
  • Targeted mobility and strengthening exercises

The goal was to reduce muscle stiffness, restore shoulder mobility, and correct his movement mechanics.

The Outcome

As the tightness in his chest and upper back eased, his shoulder movement became freer and his movement mechanics improved. His chest pain and the radiating discomfort in his back reduced, and he was able to return to his chest-press training with confidence. Just as importantly, he finally understood the real cause of his pain, which brought him peace of mind after weeks of worrying about his heart.
